March 24, 2011 - Elders Quorum Activity
7:00 pm at Per Anderson’s home. We will have a bunch of food, ping pong tournament, and the NCAA basketball tournament games running in the 184 inch theater room. Should be a really great time. Even if you don’t want to play ping pong, or can’t stay too long, plan to come by and get to know the guys in the Quorum a little better. We passed around a sign-up sheet for food last week (chips, salsa, drinks, cookies, etc.) we’ll try to get that list around Primary as well on Sunday, but let me know if you are able to bring something – it’s definitely NOT required to bring something to show up.

January Relief Society Monthly Meeting - Cookies, Company & Casseroles
Out ward is only 2 weeks old and we have to put on our first Relief Society Monthly meeting. So this one is simple - and yet we were able to complete a great service project that will be used for several months.
Since our ward is new - we decided to have a get to know you social and service project. We wanted the Sister's to be able to visit with each other in order to begin developing friendships, and better yet, to try and get to know each others names. I am sorry that I do not have pictures for this activity - the gym looked welcoming and for a quickly planned activity - we were able to socialize and complete a great and useful Service Project.
Meeting Goal - To unite the Sister's personally through socialization activity and service project.
Set-up - 4 round tables, 55 chairs set in a circle with 2 long tables in the middle of the circle.
Room Used - 1/2 the Gym
Number Attended - 55
Items Sister's asked to bring - 2 dozen cookies, 1 dozen in a plain brown paper lunch bad and another dozen for refreshments. We also asked each Sister to bring ingredient's for the casseroles.
Service Project - Freezer Casseroles and Cookie dough
Activity - White Elephant Cookie Exchange
Sister's Needed to Help - Asked 4 Sister's to be in charge of each baking table.
Preparation -
1. Cooked any ingredient that needed to be cooked ahead of time.
2. Created personal questions and cut them into strips
3. Placed each strip into a balloon
4. Balloons to the party store to be filled
We created 60 personal questions and placed each one in a balloon. We then took the balloons to a local party store where we had them filled with helium. Once at the church, we placed 60 chairs in a circle and tied a balloon to the back of the chair. This also provided a cute way to decorate the gym without spending a lot of money.
Placed in the center of the circle were 2 long tables and on those tables all the Brown Bags of cookies were placed.
We found 2 freezer casserole recipes and a chocolate chip cookie dough recipe. We asked each Sister to bring the ingredients to create the casseroles and cookie dough. The ward supplied some of the ingredients and disposable casserole pans, freezer baggies for the cookie dough and tin foil to cover the casseroles.
On the opposite side of the gym from the Balloon Circle we had 6 round tables and 3 class room tables, 2 with microwave on them and 1 with blenders. At each table we placed a different recipe and the ingredients for that recipe. If a recipe called for anything to be cooked, that was all done ahead of time. The microwaves were for softening cream cheese or butter. We had about 8 Sister's at each table and 1 Sister who was assigned to be in charge of the recipe and to also keep ask a few prepared questions of the Sister's to help them begin to get to know each other.
We also had a refreshment table set with water bottles and a place for all the cookies the Sister's were asked to bring.
Activity Time -
As the Sister's arrived we had them all sit in the balloon circle. We placed their cookies top share on the refreshment table and their brown bagged cookies on the table in the center of the circle. We had an opening prayer and then counted each Sister off 1 through 6. We knew that the Sister's would sit in the circle with their already developed friendships - in their comfort zone. By counting off, it forced them to separate as our Goal you remember was to encourage them to meet and get to know each other.
Once to the tables, they all began (under the direction of the Sister who was in charge of that table) to assemble casseroles and cookie dough. This went great - it took about 40 minutes to complete all the casseroles and cookie dough, and every table was participating, laughing and we could really see the Sister's getting to know each other. BY the time this part of the activity was completed - we had 12 completed casseroles and 12 bags of chocolate chip cookie dough balls already to freeze.
We then took all the Sister's back to the Balloon circle. There each Sister was asked to stand, tell us her name and then POP her balloon. She then had to both read her personal question out loud and and tell us the answer. Once the question was answered she was able to choose a brown bag of bookies. She had to then open the cookie bag and show us 1 cookie so that we all new what kind of cookies were in that bag.
This continued around the circle of Sister's, HOWEVER, if you wanted to "steal" the cookies that someone else had, you had to tell us not only the first and last name of that Sister you were "stealing " from, but you also had to tell us her question and the correct answer. This made everyone really pay attention to names and answers and a lot of "stealing" went on - it was great fun!
At the end of the night, we had accomplished the following -
Service Project - 12 casseroles and 12 bags of cookie dough balls - These are now frozen in my freezer and each time we have needed a meal, I take it to the home of the family in need and they cook it like a frozen lasagna - 2 hours at 325 degrees. I also take a frozen bag of vegetables and the bag of cookie dough. It has been great to just have the meals on hand when needed. We will probably have this activity again once the casseroles have all been used. This time however, I will just have a few sister's over to my home to complete the casseroles and not use a RS Monthly Meeting night to do it.
Ward Unity - The Sister's left the activity knowing so many more of the Sister's in our ward. They also got to leave with cookies to share with their family.
